Post-Operative Instructions for the Retinal Patient
Immediately After Surgery............................
1. You will have a patch on your eye. The patch comes off the next day after surgery at the office.
2. You will need to be examined the day after surgery AT THE OFFICE.
3. During that visit, we will examine your eye, answer questions and review instructions. In most cases after retinal surgery, your vision will be poor.
Drops to Use After the Operation
Drops - There are 2 different drops
1. Antibiotic Drop - usually a tan colored top
2. Prednisolone Acetate 1% - usually white or pink colored top
Directions for Using the Drops
•Use one drop of each 4x per day (e.g. breakfast, lunch, dinner, bedtime).
•Use in any order, but wait 1-2 minutes before applying the second drop. This way, the first drop won't be washed out.
•When the the antibiotic drop is finished - throw away.
•Continue the Prednisolone Acetate 1% (white or pink top) until Dr. Wong recommends stopping it. You may be using this more than one month!
What About Pain Medication?
• In almost every case, I simply recommend ibuprofen (e.g. Advil) or Tylenol (e.g. acetaminophen) for pain.
• I really do not expect there to be much pain at all. Most discomfort after surgery is actually from the eye patch!
RESTRICTIONS!!!!!
There are few restrictions on activity if you did not receive gas (read above). You may (and should!) shower, bathe, wash your hair, brush your teeth, etc. There are no physical restrictions.
If you develop pain, your vision gets worse or you are worried and have questions, please call your doctor!
Head Positioning - Not for Every Patient!
Only patients with gas injected into their eye may require specific head positioning. Follow the specific directions given to you by Dr. Wong at the hospital or surgery center.
If gas has been injected;
- no travel to higher elevations -
- no traveling to mountains -
- no air travel -
