Millions of patients in the United States have benefitted from LASIK eye surgery over the past 15 years. However, LASIK is not the answer for all patients. Individuals with a prior history of dry eye, thin and/or irregular corneas, and extreme amounts of nearsightedness are less than ideal candidates for this procedure.
In these patients, the ICL (implantable contact lens) is a better procedure. The ICL is a very thin bio-compatible lens that is surgically placed in the eye and corrects the nearsightedness of the eye. The ICL has been FDA approved since 2005 and has been implanted in over 50,000 patients worldwide. The surgery to implant the ICL takes about 15 minutes and is performed in an outpatient surgical center. Unlike LASIK, the ICL can be removed in the rare event the patient was not happy with their results.
Dr. John C Baldinger MD at Capital Eye Consultants in Fairfax, Va was the first surgeon in the Washington DC area to implant the ICL and has continued to be excited about the visual rehabilitation this lens can provide. A complimentary screening exam to find out if you are a candidate for the ICL can be scheduled by calling Capital Eye Consultants at 703-876-9630.
