Consultative Optometry

Dr. Mattern is a 1999 graduate of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry who completed his residency in ocular disease at the Baltimore Veterans’ Administration Medical Center.  While in training at the Baltimore VA, Dr. Mattern did specialty rotations in anterior segment, LASIK, and glaucoma at Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Hospital.  He also worked with University of Maryland’s Retina and Anterior Segment Specialists.  Dr. Mattern is president and owner of our clinic.

Dr. Mattern has lectured numerous times in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Maryland.  He has been a contributing editor to optometric publications as well as a consultant in the industry.  He has been a member of the American Optometric Association, Virginia Optometric Association, and Northern Virginia Optometric Society for 25 years.  He is also a member of the National Glaucoma Society.  He graduated in 1986 from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania (BFA – Photography).  

Dr. Mattern enjoys riding his motorcycle, boating with his 3 children, and doing projects/renovations at home.

Dr. Kelly is a 2022 graduate of the Southern California College of Optometry. She completed her residency in ocular disease with an emphasis in vision rehabilitation at Lexington VA Health Care System



​​​​​​​Dr. Kelly is a 2022 graduate of the Southern California College of Optometry. She completed her residency in ocular disease with an emphasis in vision rehabilitation at Lexington VA Health Care System.

During optometry school, she was a member of the Beta Sigma Kappa Honor Society, was awarded the William Feinbloom Low Vision Award, and volunteered on a mission trip to Vietnam to provide eye care to underserved communities. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of California, Irvine – majoring in biological sciences and minoring in psychology cognitive sciences.

Dr. Kelly received clinical training in pre- and postoperative LASIK/cataract management, managing ocular conditions such as macular degeneration, diabetes, corneal abrasion, and many more at her clinical externships: Lawton Indian Health Service, VA Tucson, and Wellish Vision Institute. She also has a special interest in dry eyes and glaucoma.

Dr. Kelly is fluent in Vietnamese and English. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, exploring new places/coffee shops, and participating in water sports.

Cataract and Refractive Surgeon

Dr. Baldinger is a graduate of Emory University (BA in Chemistry) and Vanderbilt University (MD 1980).  He completed his internal medicine internship at the University of Pittsburgh in 1981 and his residency training in ophthalmology at The Eye and Ear Hospital of Pittsburgh in 1984.

Dr. Baldinger is a graduate of Emory University (BA in Chemistry) and Vanderbilt University (MD 1980).  He completed his internal medicine internship at the University of Pittsburgh in 1981 and his residency training in ophthalmology at The Eye and Ear Hospital of Pittsburgh in 1984.  He also served as a vitreoretinal fellow at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary/Harvard Medical School in 1985-1986. His training in vitreoretinal disease provides expertise in eye disease from the front to the back of the eye.  He has been board certified in ophthalmology since 1986. 

For over 30 years, Dr. Baldinger has been one of the busiest cataract surgeons in the DC Metropolitan area performing over 50,000 cataract surgeries.  In 2021, he was named by his peers as one of the top 100 ophthalmologists in the United States according to Newsweek.  

He is medical director at our clinic and previously Chief of Ophthalmology at the Fairfax Surgical Center as well as previously serving on their Medical Executive Committee. He is on the Ophthalmology Advisory Committee for the HCA ambulatory division, helping to set safe practice policies for its 130 ambulatory surgery centers.  Dr. Baldinger has traveled to Central America as a volunteer to perform pterygium surgery.

In the last three decades, cataract surgery has seen tremendous improvements and Dr. Baldinger has always been on the forefront of technology.  Presently, Dr. Baldinger offers the option of femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery; multifocal, toric, and standard lenses, as well as glaucoma MIGS procedures.   

In his spare time, Dr. Baldinger enjoys traveling, fishing, and bicycling. 

Dr. Kourosh Nazari

Dr. Nazari is a board-certified cataract surgeon and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and American Academy of Ophthalmology. After graduating from North Miami Senior High, he attended Florida International University. He moved to Georgia and obtained his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in 1998. His ophthalmology training was completed at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.  During his 20 years in practice, Dr. Nazari has performed more than 30,000 successful cataract surgeries.

Dr. Nazari is a board-certified cataract surgeon and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and American Academy of Ophthalmology. After graduating from North Miami Senior High, he attended Florida International University. He moved to Georgia and obtained his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in 1998. His ophthalmology training was completed at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.  During his 20 years in practice, Dr. Nazari has performed more than 30,000 successful cataract surgeries. 

Dr. Nazari’s early interest in microscopic surgery led him to pursue a career in ophthalmology. During his training, he focused on developing surgical skills to achieve superior results for his patients. In the years following his training, Dr. Nazari has performed thousands of surgeries including surgeries on patients with rare conditions and complex problems. He has traveled abroad and tutored surgeons overseas in performing cataract, LASIK, and eyelid surgeries. He has trained doctors in Vietnam, China, Kenya, among others and has lectured at national meetings. He has served as medical director in multiple surgery centers for more than 10 years. 

His hobbies are traveling, writing, and most importantly, spending time with his family. He has written four books, Lessons from East and West, The Great Divide: America and the Middle East, The Resurgence: America in the 21st Century, The Promise: An Introduction to the History of Medicine. 

Above all he enjoys the practice of ophthalmology and taking care of patients.

Vitreo-retinal Surgeon

Dr. Alessa Crossan specializes in retina and vitreous diseases, diabetic eye care as well as retinal surgery.  Dr. Crossan completed her undergraduate degree in environmental science at Stanford University.  She earned her medical degree and completed an ophthalmology residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.  She completed a vitreoretinal surgical fellowship at Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Dr. Alessa Crossan specializes in retina and vitreous diseases, diabetic eye care as well as retinal surgery.  Dr. Crossan completed her undergraduate degree in environmental science at Stanford University.  She earned her medical degree and completed an ophthalmology residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.  She completed a vitreoretinal surgical fellowship at Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Dr. Crossan is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology as well as the American Society of Retina Specialists.  

Dr. Crossan is available to see patients every Wednesday morning.

Vitreo-retinal Surgeon

Dr. Kush Patel is a retina specialist and vitreoretinal surgeon. He specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of retinal and vitreous diseases. His clinical interests include the diagnosis and treatment of age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular diseases, retinal detachments, epiretinal membranes, macular holes, and secondary intraocular lenses.

Dr. Kush Patel is a retina specialist and vitreoretinal surgeon. He specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of retinal and vitreous diseases. His clinical interests include the diagnosis and treatment of age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular diseases, retinal detachments, epiretinal membranes, macular holes, and secondary intraocular lenses.

He attended Virginia Commonwealth University on a full academic scholarship and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a major in Biomedical Engineering and minors in Chemistry and Mathematics. He then went on to earn his medical degree from the Georgetown University School of Medicine, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and graduated with cum laude honors.

Dr. Patel completed his residency in Ophthalmology at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, serving as Chief Resident in his final year. He distinguished himself during residency and was chosen as the Outstanding Graduate for his class.

He subsequently pursued and completed a two-year fellowship in vitreoretinal diseases and surgery at NJRetina in New Brunswick, New Jersey. During his time in fellowship, Dr. Patel gained extensive experience performing complex retinal surgeries and had a particular interest in secondary intraocular lens implantation cases. He also was an active researcher, authoring several peer-reviewed articles, and serving as sub-investigator in various multi-center clinical trials.

Dr. Patel is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is also a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retina Specialists.

As a native of Northern Virginia, Dr. Patel is excited to serve and care for the community in which he was raised. In his spare time, he enjoys reading and spending time outdoors playing soccer and basketball.
