Glaucoma is one of the most serious threats to long-term vision because it can develop without obvious warning signs. In many cases, people do not notice a problem until permanent vision loss has already occurred. At Capital Eye Consultants, we emphasize the importance of proactive eye care and glaucoma screening to identify changes before they significantly affect your sight.
Glaucoma refers to a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, which carries visual information from the eye to the brain. This damage is often associated with increased pressure inside the eye, although glaucoma can also occur when eye pressure falls within the normal range.
The most common form, open-angle glaucoma, typically progresses slowly. Because early vision loss often begins in the peripheral vision, the brain can compensate for these changes and make them difficult to notice. Central vision may remain clear until the condition becomes more advanced.
Anyone can develop glaucoma, but certain factors can increase the risk. Regular comprehensive eye exams are particularly important if you have:
• A family history of glaucoma
• Increased eye pressure
• Diabetes or certain other medical conditions
• A history of significant eye injury
• Increased age
• Certain anatomical or structural characteristics of the eye
• Long-term use of corticosteroid medications
Having one or more risk factors does not mean you will develop glaucoma, but it may mean that closer monitoring is recommended.
Eye pressure testing is an important part of glaucoma evaluation, but it does not provide the complete picture. Some people have elevated eye pressure without developing optic nerve damage, while others develop glaucoma despite having pressures that fall within a typical range.
A comprehensive glaucoma evaluation may include examination of the optic nerve, measurement of eye pressure, peripheral visual field testing and additional diagnostic imaging when appropriate. Looking at multiple aspects of eye health allows us to identify subtle changes and monitor whether glaucoma may be progressing.
Vision already lost to glaucoma generally cannot be restored, which makes early diagnosis especially important. When detected promptly, glaucoma can often be managed to reduce eye pressure and slow or prevent additional optic nerve damage.
Treatment depends on the type and severity of glaucoma and may include prescription eye drops, laser procedures or surgical treatment. Ongoing follow-up is also essential because glaucoma requires long-term monitoring. Changes in eye pressure, optic nerve appearance or visual fields can help determine whether treatment needs to be adjusted.
Routine comprehensive eye examinations provide an opportunity to detect glaucoma before you realize something is wrong. If you are at increased risk or have not had your eyes evaluated recently, scheduling an exam with your optometrist can be an important step toward preserving your sight.
At Capital Eye Consultants we take an in depth approach to glaucoma evaluations when you are at higher risk or have had suspicious findings at your optometrist’s visit.
