When patients hear the term refractive lens exchange, they often wonder how it relates to cataract treatment and whether it is safe. Refractive lens exchange (RLE) and cataract surgery use the same core surgical approach - the eye’s natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens. The difference is usually the reason for surgery. Cataract surgery is performed when the natural lens has become cloudy, while refractive lens exchange may be discussed in the context of reducing dependence on glasses.
